Understanding Black Mice
Appearance & Behavior
Mice range in color from white to light brown, dark brown, silver, gray or black. Some mice exhibit dual coloration. White and brown is the most common of these combinations, while some specimens may have white, brown and black coats. Colorful mice are typically bred with those colorations for the pet trade. However, there is no distinct species known as black mice.
House mice are the most likely mouse encountered in a home. They usually are grey to brown on top with a light-colored belly. House mice are 6.5 to 9.5 cm long in body length. They are known to nest in walls, cabinets and other areas around the home. House mice prefer to nest close to food sources and normally will nest within 30 feet of them. House mice can be very destructive by gnawing on objects including electrical wires, which can result in fires. They also can carry diseases and contaminate food and surfaces with their urine and feces.
