Pest Control
More on pests in your area
Bowling Green, Kentucky, boasts a population that numbers just over 60,000 residents. While thousands of people call the third-most populous city in the state home, pests like bed bugs are making their home in the area. These pests can be found in public spaces, such as hotels, restaurants, shops, doctors offices, hospitals, nursing homes, day cares, schools, universities, dorms, apartment buildings, and even in private residences. Although these pests are not known carriers and transmitters of disease, they are an unwelcome nuisance.
The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services has provided information that explains the origin of bed bugs and how to help treat the pest. These health experts suggest contacting a pest management specialist if an infestation of bed bugs is present. They also recommend disposing of any infested items, such as box springs and contacting their local solid waste agency for proper disposal.
There’s another biting pest that can be found in the state of Kentucky and across the county: the mosquito. These pests tend to be active during the early morning hours, at dusk when the temperature is mild, with some species being active at night. Mosquitos can pose a hazard to human health via illness such as West Nile and the recently publicized Zika Virus. When spending time outdoors, especially during peak mosquito activity, the CDC recommends using a repellant that contains 20 to 30 percent DEET for adults and no more than 10 percent for children. Unmoving water serves as a breeding ground for mosquitos, so residents can help prevent them by eliminating stagnant water in birdbaths, dog bowls, potted plants and other bodies of water with very little or no water flow.
